The statement said, “This is the second case in just two weeks of successful campaign to defend Indian fishermen in collaboration with MRCC, Colombo.” The Navy said that the fishermen were later handed over to the Vattala police station for further processing.

The issue of fishermen is a controversial issue in relations between India and Sri Lanka. In the past, Indian fishermen allegedly entered the water region of the island nation in the past, there have been incidents of firing on behalf of Sri Lankan Navy personnel and seizing their boats.

Pak Strait is a narrow water area separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. It is a rich region for fishermen of both countries.
