The border dispute between two neighboring countries of South-East Asia Thailand and Cambodia now seems to be changing into an open battle. During the bloody conflict from July 24, the Cambodian army has allegedly used BM-21 Grad Multiple Rocket Launcher of Russian origin, after which the situation has become more stressful. The Thai army has replied with a balanced but strict shelling.

So far, at least 15 people have been reported in this struggle and dozens of injuries have been reported. This tension between the two countries has been going on for years, but this time the weapon which has been used, indicates that the clash has now come out of the traditional realm.

Where did the dispute start?

The root of this struggle is associated with a 7th-century Hindu temple, on which the two countries claim their sovereignty. The temple is located in the border of Cambodia, but Thailand claims that the area around the temple is its. Although the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had recognized Cambodia’s authority over the temple, the increasing activities in the Thai army area have again provoked tension.

What is BM-21 Grad Rocket System?

The BM-21 Grad is a Soviet carpet multiple rocket launcher system (MRLs), developed in the 1960s. It is called a fighter vehicle or sown machine. This truck-based weapon can fire 40 rockets in 6 seconds and 122 mm caliber rockets can target enemy tanks, cannons and military bases simultaneously.

Once firing it takes 10 minutes to load it again. According to experts, such weapons are not usually used in border clashes, which makes it clear that Cambodia has taken an aggressive stance this time.

Will the regional danger increase?

Military experts believe that weapons like BM-21 are used only in serious war conditions. Their use can also be seen like a warning that now the struggle will not be limited to limited conflict. This can not only make the Thai-Kambodia struggle and fierce, but it can also affect the stability of the entire southeast Asia.
