Taking a historic decision, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has appointed a woman as the Vice Chancellor for the first time. Professor Uma Kanjilal has been given the responsibility of this post. Pro. Kanjilal has been working in the education world for a long time and has made many notable contribution in the fields of digital learning, e-education and online education.
The establishment of IGNOU has been more than four decades, but now for the first time a woman has been given the command of the university. Earlier Prof. Uma Kanjilal was operating the university as a acting Vice Chancellor. Apart from this, she has also served as Pro-Vice Chancellor from March 2021 to July 2024.
Long experience of education and career
Pro. Kanjilal received his Masters degree from Christ Church College, Kanpur. He has earned a PhD degree from Jivaji University. He started his career in 1984 as a research assistant at IIT Kanpur. After this, he started working as a lecturer in IGNCA and then IGNOU.
She has worked in many big roles like University Librarian, Director of School of Social Sciences and Head of Online Education Center. His expertise is in digital library, e-learning and multimedia courses development.

Three decades of educational experience
According to the Ministry of Education, Prof. Uma Kanjilal has been working continuously in the field of education for the past 30 years. He has paid special attention to technical education, digital learning and flexible education models. He is currently the national coordinator of the Digital Education platform like ‘Swayam’ and ‘Swayamprabha’.
Activism was also internationally
Pro. Kanjilal’s contribution was not limited to India only. He has received Fulbright Fellowship at Illinois University (USA) and also participated in the Digital Education Project of UNRWA, Jordan. He has received several awards like Australia-India Council Grant, Danida Fellowship and Manthan Award.
