Delhi is the capital of our country. The names of many roads, fours and villages have been changed in Delhi over time. These changes have been made sometimes to remove the names of the British Raj and sometimes to respect our culture and history. Let us see which areas have been changed in Delhi.

Which places changed names

First let’s talk about Rajpath which was earlier called ‘Kingsway’. In 2022, its name was changed to duty path. This name was named to increase the spirit of duty in the country. The Mughal Garden was named Amrit Udyan. Then comes Aurangzeb Road. The name of this road was changed in 2015 to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road was kept, which gives respect to our former President and scientist Dr. Abdul Kalam. Race Course Road. This road, where the Prime Minister’s house is, became a public welfare road in 2016. Dalhousie Road was also renamed Dara Shikoh Road. The name of Teen Murti Chowk was changed in 2018 to Teen Murti Haifa Chowk. Recently in 2024, the name of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk was changed to Birsa Munda Chowk, which honors tribal leader Birsa Munda.

The names of some villages have also changed

Mohammadpur village in South Delhi became Madhavapuram in 2022. Apart from this, some people want Shakurbasti to be named ‘Jai Sriramapuram’ and Mustafabad’s name should be ‘Shiv Vihar’, but these changes have not been confirmed yet.

Why names are changed

The purpose of renaming the road or any area can be historical cultural or social reasons, for which the Municipal Corporation local administration allows the state government and sometimes the central government to change the name. This entire process is done by local authorities in small cities and this work is done in big cities with the help of the state government and municipal corporation.
