Where is Totapuri mango cultivated the most?

Totapuri mango is mainly cultivated in the states of South India. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu are its main producing states. Apart from this, it is also produced well in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Due to the large number of pulp industries in many areas, farmers do not face much trouble in selling their crops and they get better prices. This variety of mango is known by different names in different regions, but it is identified by its long shape and pointed nose like a parrot’s beak, hence it was also named Totapuri mango.

How does Totapuri mango taste?

The taste of Totapuri mango is different from other sweet varieties. It has light, sour and less sweetness, due to which it is considered most suitable for making juice, pulp, shake and pickles. When ripe, its peel becomes yellow and the pulp becomes yellow orange. The weight of one fruit usually ranges from 250 to 500 grams. It is in highest demand in the processing industry because its pulp is thick and high quality pulp is prepared from it.

Soil and climate for Totapuri mango cultivation

Deep and well drained soil is considered most suitable for the cultivation of Totapuri mango. It grows well in red loam, alluvial and laterite soil. It is considered better to have soil pH between 6.5 to 7.5. Talking about climate, tropical and sub-tropical areas are most suitable for its cultivation. Temperature of 24 to 30 degree Celsius and adequate moisture is beneficial for better growth of the crop. Warm weather before flowering is considered good, while excessive rainfall during flowering can affect pollination.

When and how to transplant the plant?

August-September and February-March are considered the best times for planting Totapuri mango. For grafted plants, it is better to keep a distance of 99 meters. About 1 month before planting, pits of 1*1*1 meter size are prepared, in which cow dung or manure or compost is mixed with the soil. For better production, it is necessary to prune dry and weak branches of trees from time to time. This ensures proper flow of sunlight and air to the trees. Special attention should also be paid to weed control in the field for the first 4 to 5 years, so that the plants can get adequate nutrition and moisture.
