Jammu-Kashmir Flood: CM Omar Abdullah arrives in flood affected areas, request home minister for compensation

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself reached the affected areas after the Jhelum river came out in the Budgam district on Thursday. He assured the local people that the government is taking all possible steps to prevent such floods in future. The administration and the disaster management team took timely action in the area amidst the danger in the area due to heavy rains and rising water levels of the river.

Taunts on previous governments

Citing the 2014 floods, the Chief Minister said that the ruling government of that time did not take any concrete steps to protect the valley from the flood. Omar Abdullah raised the question, “What did you do for the last 11 years. After learning the lesson of 2014, we had prepared a package, under which the water caroring capacity which is in both will be extended in Jahalam and in the flood channel. But, we have to say with regret that today it seems that these 11 years which are 11 years old.”

Review of loss and preparation for compensation

The Chief Minister said that a visit to ten districts of Jammu has been decided. He said that by writing Chitti, requested the Home Minister to send the team to Kashmir so that the damage caused to the affected areas like Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, Anant and Baramulla can be correctly assessed. Omar Abdullah said that proper compensation should be given to the affected people and its package should also be declared by the Center.


Emphasis on government preparations

He instructed the officials to intensify relief work in flood affected areas and provide all possible help to the affected people. The Chief Minister also said that the administration is fully ready to deal with such disasters in future.

The locals were worried about the rain and the rising water level of the river. The administration immediately protected people in relief camps and provided food and drink facilities. There was a feeling of relief among the people from the Chief Minister’s visit and his assurance.
