Gujarat -born Narendra Damodar Das Modi is currently not only the Prime Minister of India but he is the biggest face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and it was seen in the year 2014. In 2014, while holding the post of Chief Minister of Gujarat, he contested from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and then became the Prime Minister of India and proved to be a historic turning point for BJP in UP.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi’s association with UP was a game changer for BJP. Modi wave won 71 out of 80 seats in UP. Where in the year 2009, BJP won 10 seats, but in the 2014 elections, not only the seat, BJP’s vote percentage increased from 15% to about 43%.
Modi magic also showed in 2017 and 2022 assembly elections
After the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in the 2017 UP Assembly elections, BJP won 312 seats and formed its government in the state. This victory of BJP was a big victory over Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance at that time. After this, in the Lok Sabha elections held in 2019, BJP won 62 seats and 255 seats in 2022 assembly, BJP maintained dominance in UP. After the Modi wave, the new politics of Hindutva benefited the BJP in many states and after that the party formed its government in many states.
BJP’s graph fell in 2024 Lok Sabha elections
After the major victories of 2014 and 2019, BJP’s graph in UP was seen to fall quite a lot in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In this election, the BJP remained reduced to only 33 seats, in front of the BJP, the SP-Congress alliance won 43 seats. However, after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, by -elections were held in 9 assembly seats in UP, out of which BJP won 6 seats and RLD won 2 seats and RLD on one seat.
