Nasal spray diuretic: American drug regulator US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has first approved such a nasal spray diocerery, which will help in treating inflammation (edema) in serious diseases related to heart, kidney and liver. This drug will be known as Enbumyst (Bumetanide Nasal Spray) and has developed it by Costasis Therapeutics Company in NEVADA.
What is edema and why is it dangerous?
Edema is the condition of additional fluid accumulation in the body. This problem is most commonly seen among the patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), kidney disease and liver disease. Every year about 1 million patients are admitted to the hospital in America. According to doctors, when excess water and salt accumulates in the body, swelling in the feet, hands and stomach increases. This condition can prove fatal if not getting treatment for a long time.
Role of diuretics
Diauretics, usually called “water pills”, are medicines that help to remove excess salt and water from the body through the kidneys. This reduces the liquid flowing in the blood tubes and makes it easy to control blood pressure.
- Till now patients were given diuretics either oral tablets or Intravinus (IV) injections.
- There was a problem in tablets that many times they do not have Absorption properly and the effect would start late.
- At the same time, IV had to go to the hospital or infusion center for medicines, which led to both expenses and discomfort.
Why is Enbumyst special?
Enbumyst Nasal Spray approved by FDA is considered a solution to both these problems. Patients can also use it at home and it is rapidly absorbed into the body through the nose.
68 participants aged 18 to 55 years were included in the clinical trials conducted by the company between December 2023 and April 2024. The results found that this spray shows a rapid effect and its effect is as reliable as IV Bumetanide.

CEO Ben Esque of CORSTASIs Therapeutics says that “this approval of FDA is a major progress in the treatment of edema for both patients and doctors.” Dr. Anuradha Lala-Trindade, a cardiologist at New York Mount Sinai Fuster Hospital, said that “This drug can provide treatment at home before reaching the hospital. It can also reduce the financial burden of the healthcare system.”
Drug side effects
Some common side effects of this medicine have been revealed in clinical studies, of which-
- Hypovolemia (lack of liquid in the body)
- Headache
- muscle cramps
- Dizziness
- Nausea
When will it be launched?
According to the company, Enbumyst Nasal Spray is expected to be launched in the market by the end of 2025. It is being considered a game-changer for millions of patients struggling with edema and fluid overload.
