The Khagaria seat has always been in the discussion political and socially before the Bihar assembly elections. This seat, which came into existence in 1951, was once considered a strong stronghold of the Congress, but over time the political equations changed. Now this Janata Dal has become a thorn collision ground between United (JDU) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
So far 17 elections have been held in this constituency. The Congress won five times, while JDU captured this seat three times. Apart from this, United Samajwadi Party, Independent candidates and BJP won twice, Janata Party, CPI and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) once won. In the last elections, strict competition was seen between the NDA and the Grand Alliance.
Bhumihar and Brahmin votes are bowed towards BJP and JDU
Ethnic equations have always been important in Khagaria politics. According to the data, in Khagaria, Vaishya 50,000, Yadav 32,000, Dalit 30,000, Muslim 24,000, forward caste 20,000, Kurmi 18,000, Koyri 16,000, Paswan 15,000, Sahni 15,000 and other castes hold the number of 45,000 voters. The Yadav society is socially and politically influential and provides a strong foundation for the RJD. At the same time, Bhumihar and Brahmins are traditionally bent towards BJP and JDU. Kurmi, Koyri and Dalit classes are also important for all parties, while Muslim voters usually live in favor of RJD and Congress.
Flood and erosion issue became important in elections
Local issues such as flood, unemployment and agrarian crisis also affect the electoral atmosphere. Khagaria is situated on the banks of Kosi, Ganga, Budhi Gandak and Bagmati rivers, which are repeatedly in the grip of floods and erosion. It also makes issues like regional development and rehabilitation a part of electoral debate.
This political party is particularly focused on this seat
From the point of view of history, the Congress dominated from 1952 to 1962. The United Samajwadi Party won in 1967 and 1969. From 1972 to 2015, the seat was occupied by JDU and other parties. In 2020, Chhatrapati Yadav of Congress created a political stir by defeating Poonam Devi Yadav of JDU by just 3,000 votes. This time the eyes of political parties are specially focused on this seat.
Various population, ethnic equations and local problems of Khagaria assembly seat make it an important ground for politics of Bihar. The result here in the upcoming election can affect the political equation of the state.
