Cough syrup deaths: Can the phlegm syrup that you are giving to your children, can it be fatal. In fact, 9 children died after drinking a generic cough medicine supplied under the Chief Minister’s Free Drug Scheme in Sikar and Bharatpur government hospitals in Rajasthan. At present, the Health Department of the Government of Rajasthan has constituted a three -member committee to investigate the case after the news of 9 deaths due to drug consumption. More than 20 batch of drug called dextromethorphan hydrobromide syrup IP 13.5 Mg/5 Ml has been banned and the sample has been sent for examination. What is dextromethorphan hydrobromide syrup?
This syrup was discovered during the 1950s and it was said to be a safe alternative to the drugs that habit of codeine. It is a kind of cough -reducing drug, which is mostly given doctors during dry cough. Its main task is to prevent coughing signals in the brain, so that patients will get relief from it. It is prepared by chemical processing, in which dextromethorphon hydrobromide is done as an active compound. Most of the syrup is given as syrup to ensure that children can drink it easily.
What do experts say?
From the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and US FDA, it has been said that children under 4 years of age should not give dextromethorphon or similar over-the-counter syrup. The FDA report mentions that such syrup can cause breathing problems, excessive sleep pressure, dizziness, seizures and even death. Many reports mention that it should not be given to 2 -year -old children and should give limited quantity to children between 2 years to 6 years. Apart from this, people older than 6 years should also use it under the supervision of doctors. Doctors say that if you already have liver, kidney problem or other serious health problems, then before using it, you must take advice of a doctor.
