Filing an FIR is considered the most important process in the Indian legal system. Investigation of any crime starts only when an FIR is registered in the police station. But often the victims faced the problem that the police station refused to register the case saying that the case was not within their jurisdiction. In such a situation, the victims kept wandering here and there and sometimes due to delay the evidence also got destroyed. To solve this problem, the concept of Zero FIR was brought. This rule is part of the amendments made especially after the Nirbhaya case so that the victim can get immediate relief and the criminal does not get a chance to escape punishment.
What is FIR?
FIR i.e. First Information Report is the first written report that the police files on receiving information about a crime. It is registered only in the police station in whose area the crime took place. For example, if any incident of theft, robbery, murder or rape has happened in any area, then the FIR will be registered in that police station. After this the police of that police station starts investigation and action. It is legally mandatory for the police to register an FIR.
What is zero FIR?
Zero FIR means that no matter where the crime took place, the victim can go to any nearest police station and lodge a complaint. In this, the number of FIR starts with “0” (Zero), hence it is called Zero FIR. Later this case is transferred to the police station of the concerned area. Its biggest advantage is that there is no delay in filing the complaint and investigation starts immediately.

Why did the concept of zero FIR come into existence?
After the Nirbhaya gangrape case (2012), when outrage spread across the country, it was seen that many times the victims face a lot of difficulty in filing complaints in the police station. Police officers used to postpone the matter saying that it was not a matter of their area. For this reason, the provision of zero FIR was added to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act made in 2013. The Home Ministry and the Supreme Court also made this system mandatory so that the victim can get immediate justice process.
