Gold Purity Check: It is not a new thing to say how special gold is for Indians. From marriages to small functions or festivals, the ritual of buying or gifting gold to each other has been going on for a long time. The festivals of Dhanteras and Diwali are also going to come in a few days. Buying gold jewelery or coins during this period is considered auspicious. However, in the meantime, amid the rising prices of gold, there has been a decline in its purchases, but at the same time, the incidents of selling fake and or impure gold in the market are also increasing. Now the question comes how to avoid this?
Avoid becoming a victim of fraud
To protect buyers from such frauds, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made hallmarking of gold mandatory in most of the districts and has launched a mobile app by the name of BIS Care, with the help of which consumers will be able to easily find out how pure the gold is. Is it fake or adulterated? The surprising thing is that for this you will have to spend only Rs 45. In this way you will be saved from becoming a victim of fraud while shopping.
Why is hallmarking important?
Whenever the demand for gold increases during the festive season, many businessmen try to earn profit by selling poor quality or adulterated gold. To deal with this, BIS has implemented hallmarking standards which guarantee the purity and quality of gold. Hallmarking is an official certificate which shows whether the gold is really as pure as the jeweler is claiming it to be. In a way, this gives confidence to the buyers. By November 14, 2024, a total of 361 districts in the country have come under the purview of mandatory hallmarking. That means jewelery purchased in these districts will be hallmarked.
How to determine purity in this way?
To check the purity of gold online, first of all go to Google Play Store or Apple App Store and download the BIS CARE app. Now look for the 6 digit HUID number on hallmark jewellery. After this, go to the app, go to the ‘Verify HUID’ option, enter the HUID number and click on the ‘Search’ button. With this you will know how pure the gold is, when and where it has been hallmarked etc.
If this information matches with the information given by the jeweler, then it is fine. Your gold is real. If there is no match, you can lodge a complaint through BIS CARE app. If you want to check the purity of gold offline, you can go to hallmarking centers recognized by BIS. They charge Rs 45 for the test. If the purity of hallmarked jewelery is found to be less than the purity indicated on it, the buyer will also be entitled to compensation.
