Most Runs Off a Single Ball: India’s victory in the second test against West Indies seems certain. India has to score 121 runs to win. Till the fourth day of the second test, India has scored 63 runs at the loss of one wicket, now Team India needs only 58 runs to win on the last day. Now it is impossible for West Indies to win this match. If there is a miracle then it is a different matter, like it happened once in Australia when 286 runs were scored on one ball.
The report of this match was published in the London newspaper ‘Pal-Mal Gazette’ on 15 January 1894. The newspaper claimed that this unique incident had happened in the match played between Victoria and Scratch XI at Burnbury ground in Australia. In that match, 286 runs were scored on one ball, however, those who do not know about this match should be asked what is the maximum number of runs that can be scored on one ball. In response to this question, 99 percent people will say seven runs, but in the history of cricket, 286 runs have been scored on one ball.
What happened in that match?
The tree was within the boundary line: During the match, the Victoria batsman hit a powerful shot and the ball got stuck in the branches of a tree inside the boundary line.
Umpire’s decision: The Scratch XI team appealed to the umpire for ‘lost ball’, but the umpire rejected the appeal as the ball was clearly visible on the tree, hence the umpire ruled that the ball could not be declared lost.
Batsmen kept running: As long as the ball remained stuck on the tree, both the batsmen kept running continuously between the wickets. The fielding team had no way of getting the ball out, then the umpire called for an ax to cut the trees, but how could the trees be cut so quickly. Finally a gun was called to aim and try to make the ball fall from the tree. After several attempts the ball finally fell down.
Record breaking runs: By the time the ball reached the wicketkeeper’s hands, both the batsmen had scored 286 runs. It is said that both the players had run about 6 kilometers. Even today this incident is discussed, but it is not easy for anyone to believe it.
