A big case has come to light in America, where famous national security expert of Indian origin Ashley Tellis has been arrested on charges of possessing confidential documents and having links with China. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Saturday raided his house in Vienna, Virginia, from where more than 1000 pages of top secret documents were recovered.

The FBI says Tellis illegally possessed classified defense documents related to US national security and met with Chinese officials several times over the past few years. According to an affidavit filed by the FBI, thousands of documents were found hidden in locked cabinets, desks and bags in the basement office of Tellis’ home. Many of these were stamped Top Secret and Secret.

Big revelation made in investigation

The investigation also revealed that on September 25, Tellis was captured on camera printing hundreds of classified documents from the US State Department’s computer system. He saved a 1,288-page file named US Air Force Tactics with the name Econ Reform and deleted the file after printing a few pages.

On October 10, another security camera captured Tellis carrying documents hidden in his bag from a government facility in Alexandria, Virginia. The FBI report said that between September 2022 and September 2025, Tellis held secret meetings with Chinese government officials several times in restaurants in the Fairfax area of ​​Virginia. He arrived at a meeting with a manila envelope which he did not have when he left.

Tellis has studied from Mumbai

Iran-China relations, Artificial Intelligence and America-Pakistan policies were discussed in these meetings. During the September 2025 meeting, Tellis also received a red gift bag from Chinese officials. Mumbai-born Ashley Tellis, 64, studied at St. Xavier’s College and Mumbai University and did a PhD in political science from the University of Chicago. He has been one of the key negotiators of the US-India Civil Nuclear Deal.

Tellis previously served as Special Assistant to US President George W. Bush and Director of Strategic Planning and South Asia Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC). He was currently working as a contractor for the Department of Defense and was a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

FBI took the opportunity to raid

According to the FBI, Tellis was preparing to leave on a trip to Rome with his family on the evening of October 11, but before the flight, his home was raided and he was arrested. Investigation of the documents recovered from him is going on.

On October 13, he was formally charged in Virginia District Court. Telis is currently being prosecuted for violating national security laws, theft of classified documents and failure to report foreign contacts.
