Afghanistan has clearly refused to play the tri-series in Pakistan. On the other hand, captain Rashid Khan has indicated that he will no longer play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Actually, Afghanistan has withdrawn its name from the upcoming triangular T20 series with the participation of Pakistan after the killing of three Afghan cricketers in Paktika.
For your information, let us tell you that a tri-series was to be played between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka from 17 to 29 November in Rawalpindi and Lahore, which would have been in T20 format. It was considered important for all three countries to prepare for the T20 World Cup to be held next year.
In a scathing statement, the Afghanistan Cricket Board said it was deeply saddened by the martyrdom of its players Kabir, Sibgatullah and Haroon, who were murdered along with five others in Arghun district of Paktika province while they were returning from playing a friendly match in the provincial capital Sharana. Seven others were also injured in this incident.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board said in a statement, “The Afghanistan Cricket Board expresses its grief over the martyrdom of its brave cricketers in the Argun district of Paktika province. They were targeted in a cowardly attack by the Pakistani regime. This is a huge loss for the sporting world of Afghanistan, the players and the cricket family. In expressing its condolences to the victims and in response to this incident, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has decided to postpone the match to be held in Pakistan in late November. “Have decided to withdraw from the triangular T20 series.”
Many reports have said that Pakistan has carried out air strikes in Argun and Barmal districts of Paktika province, due to which the ceasefire between the two countries has also ended.
Star spinner Rashid Khan condemned the attack and said that he is deeply saddened by the death of civilians in Pakistan’s air strikes in Afghanistan. Attacking civilian targets is immoral and barbaric, he wrote in a statement on Twitter. This unjust and illegal action is a violation of human rights and should be addressed. In view of the deaths of innocent people, I am with the ACB’s decision not to play the upcoming series with Pakistan. I am with the people of my country in difficult times. There is nothing greater than the dignity of our country.
Former captain Gulbadin Naib said, we are saddened by the cowardly military attack in Argun, Paktika in which many innocent civilians and cricketers have lost their lives. This brutal action of the Pakistani Army is an attack on our people, our pride and freedom, but it will not break the Afghan spirit.
All-rounder Samiullah Shinwari said, I am saddened by the news of the martyrdom of our brave players in Argun district of Paktika who were attacked by Pakistani military regime after a friendly cricket match. He wrote on X, this is sad not only for Paktika but for the entire country and the cricket community. I express my condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Paktika. We will never forget their memories and sacrifice.
