The famous Louvre Museum of Paris has been suddenly closed. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati said that the theft took place as soon as the museum opened on Saturday morning. The minister wrote on social media, ‘This morning there was theft in the Louvre Museum. No one was injured. I am at the spot along with the museum staff and the police.
What was said on the museum’s website?
According to French news agency AFP, the thieves escaped with the jewels from the museum. However, the Louvre administration has not yet commented on this incident. The museum’s website states that the museum is closed for today due to ‘special reasons’. The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous art museums in the world and houses famous artworks like the Mona Lisa.
Thieves found entry point from construction site
The theft incident has been carried out in a filmy style. According to news agency AFP, Paris Police said that one or more criminals entered the museum early in the morning. According to a French newspaper, the thieves entered from an area facing the Seine River where construction work is currently going on. They reached a room in the Apollo Gallery through the external lift installed to transport construction material and entered inside by breaking the windows.
Jewels stolen from Napoleon and Queen’s collection
Once inside, the thieves allegedly broke into the jewelery collection of Napoleon and the Queen. They stole a total of 9 precious jewelery from there. Police and museum administration have confirmed the incident and the value of the stolen jewelery is currently being assessed. Local media reports said that three masked thieves committed the crime as soon as the museum opened. After the theft, they fled on a scooter waiting outside.
