Relations between America and Ukraine have once again become strained. A report by the Financial Times (FT) has claimed that during a meeting held at the White House, US President Donald Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept Russia’s terms.
It has been said in the report that this conversation became so heated that the atmosphere escalated from debate to shouting. Trump rejected Zelensky’s military maps during the meeting and said that Ukraine should hand over the Donbass region to Russia.
‘If Putin wants, he will destroy you’, Trump warns
Trump told Zelensky that Vladimir Putin is very powerful and if he wants, he will destroy you. Describing the Ukraine war as a special operation, he said that it is not a real war. It has also been reported that Trump threw away maps of the Ukrainian army and said, “I am fed up with these red lines.”
Russia’s new ceasefire proposal
Actually Putin has given Trump a new ceasefire proposal for Ukraine. This proposal states that Ukraine will have to give the Donbass region to Russia, while parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia will remain with Ukraine. Ukraine completely rejected this and clearly said that the sovereignty and borders of the country cannot be changed at any cost.
Zelensky’s displeasure and Trump’s pressure
In the meeting, when Ukrainian representatives tried to show the war situation and their counter-strategy, Trump rejected all the arguments. Zelensky firmly said that Ukraine will fight for its independence till the last breath. In response, Trump talked about limiting military aid and decided to stop the supply of Tomahawk missiles.
Internal disagreement in the White House
According to a Reuters report, this meeting also highlights the growing disagreements within the Trump administration. Vice President JD Vance also accused Zelensky of being ungrateful and said Ukraine should show more gratitude for American cooperation. European officials told the FT that Trump repeated Putin’s language throughout the meeting and repeatedly asked the Ukrainian side to remain calm.
Europe’s concerns and changing equations
The Financial Times also wrote that there is growing concern among European leaders that Trump’s stance could change America’s Ukraine policy. If America leans in favor of Russia, it will not only affect the morale of Ukraine, but may also weaken the strategic unity of the European Union.
Zelensky’s answer- ‘Democracy will remain united’
Zelensky issued a press statement on Sunday (19 October 2025) saying that peace is possible only when all democratic countries stand together. He appealed to America and G7 countries to take decisive steps. On this, Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Putin has achieved something, he has won some areas. I am confident that now we will restore peace.”
Trump and Putin will meet in Hungary
According to the report, Trump and Putin have agreed to hold a new meeting in Budapest in the next two weeks. Earlier, the meeting held in Alaska in August ended without any result as Putin rejected Trump’s proposal for an immediate ceasefire.
