The summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary has been postponed. An American official said on Tuesday (21 October 2025) that there are no plans for a meeting between President Trump and Putin. The announcement came a day after talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
A lot of preparation is still needed: Kremlin
According to the report of news agency Associated Press, Trump and Putin were to meet in Budapest to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there should be no rush for a meeting between the two leaders as a lot of preparation is still needed.
US President Donald Trump reversed his stance in September and said that Ukraine would have to give up its territory. However, he also suggested that Ukraine could win back the land lost to Russia. However, after a phone conversation with Putin last week and a subsequent meeting with Zelensky on Friday (October 17, 2025), Trump once again changed his stance and called on both countries to immediately stop the war.
‘Moscow is adopting extremist stance regarding demands’
There was a phone conversation between Trump and Putin on October 16, 2025. After this both the leaders agreed to meet in Budapest. The last meeting of Trump and Putin took place in Alaska in August 2025. According to CNN report, the proposed preparatory session between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been postponed for the time being, because the US is worried that Moscow is adopting an extremist stance in its demands.
Russia’s stance has not changed: Lavrov
Lavrov rejected CNN’s statement and said that Russia’s stance has not changed since the Alaska summit in August. Lavrov told that he had said the same things in a phone conversation with Marco Rubio on Monday (20 October 2025). The White House described that conversation as positive, but said that the two foreign ministers would not meet face to face this week. Russia insists that any lasting settlement must deal with the root causes of the war.
