Turkey Israel Tensions: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given a strong warning regarding the increasing tension in the Eastern Mediterranean. He said that efforts are being made to stoke the fire of conflict in the region, especially around the island of Cyprus, and if there is an attempt to harm the rights of the Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot people, the response will be extremely harsh.
In several posts on social media, Erdogan said that Turkey is closely monitoring these developments and will not tolerate any provocation.
Outrage over Israel-Greece-Cyprus alliance
The reason behind Erdogan’s sharp statement is believed to be the new military and energy alliance being formed between Israel, Greece and Cyprus. Turkiye alleges that this alliance is part of its strategy to limit and surround its influence in the region. Addressing party lawmakers, Erdogan said that some small groups are creating instability in the region to advance Israel’s interests. He said that these countries are just building “fortresses in the air” and they should avoid taking risky steps.
Direct warning to Israel
The Turkish President said that the silence of the international community has emboldened Israel and its policies are becoming a threat to peace, stability and security in the region. He said that bringing Israel under the ambit of international law is now not just an issue of some countries but of the entire humanity.
Concern increased due to military alliance
Israel has signed an agreement with Greece and Cyprus to create a joint rapid-response military task force of about 2,500 soldiers in the eastern Mediterranean. Under this, the Israeli Air Force and Navy are using some military bases in Greece and Cyprus.
Turkey sees this as a siege of its maritime borders and Northern Cyprus. Turkey’s concern has also increased regarding Israeli military actions in Lebanon and Syria. Erdogan said that if this situation escalates, it could directly impact Turkey’s security.
