On the occasion of Diwali, toll employees, angry over getting a bonus of only Rs 1100, created a ruckus at the Fatehabad toll of Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The employees opened the toll gates in protest, allowing thousands of vehicles to pass through without paying any fee for hours. Due to this the company suffered a financial loss of lakhs of rupees. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control and negotiated a settlement between the officers and employees. The question here is, how much money do toll plaza owners earn in one or two hours? Let’s find out.

How much do toll owners earn in two hours?

If you often travel on the highway, it is common to pay some tax at the toll plaza every time. But have you ever wondered how much money is earned from these toll booths? According to the data of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the income of some major toll plazas of the country is so high that the owners earn lakhs of rupees in just two hours. More than 850 toll plazas are working across the country, which earn crores of rupees every day.

What is the approximate daily income?

About 20,000 to 50,000 vehicles pass through an average toll plaza every day. If we calculate this, then in just two hours one can earn Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh from the toll plaza. This figure depends on the traffic density and toll rate of that area. For example, on busy highways like Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway or Yamuna Expressway, the number of vehicles is very high. Here toll is charged from 80 to 120 rupees from cars, 250 rupees from buses and 400 rupees from trucks. Thousands of vehicles pass through these routes every day, due to which the daily income of some toll plazas reaches Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

For how many years can toll be collected?

This entire earning goes directly to the owner of the toll plaza or the company to which NHAI has given the right to operate. Most toll booths run on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. That is, after building a road, the government allows a private company to collect toll, so that it can recover the cost and profit of the investment. This period usually ranges from 15 to 30 years.

Which toll plaza earns the most?

According to NHAI report, India’s highest earning toll plazas include Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Delhi-Gurugram Toll, Hosur Road Toll and Eastern Peripheral Expressway Toll. Due to heavy rush of vehicles at these places, one can earn up to Rs 10 lakh in just two hours. This is the reason why many private companies consider investment in toll projects as a stable and long-term profitable business.

Increase in earnings of toll owners

Interestingly, after the implementation of digital payments and FASTag system, both the speed and transparency of toll collection have increased. Now cash transactions at toll plazas have reduced, which has reduced corruption and wastage of time. This has also increased the earnings of toll owners, because traffic moves in smoother flow and more vehicles pass in less time.
