Mohammed Ahmed, who went to Russia from Telangana in search of employment, is stuck there amid the Russia-Ukraine war. His wife Afsha Begum, a resident of Hyderabad, has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to save 37-year-old Ahmed. He went to Russia in April, where agents allegedly cheated him and forced him to fight on the front.

In a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Ahmed’s wife said that a Mumbai-based consultancy firm had offered her husband a job in a construction company in Russia. He said that as per their agreement, Ahmed left India and reached Russia in April 2025.

What did Ahmed tell by releasing the video from Russia?
In a selfie video purportedly recorded in Russia, Ahmed said that out of the 25 people who trained with him, 17 had died, including one Indian. He further said that the place I am at is the border and there is a war going on. We four Indians refused to go to the war zone. While threatening, he pointed the weapon at another person. They pointed a gun at my neck and said that they would shoot me and tell the world that I had been killed in a drone attack.

Ahmed further said, “I have a plaster on my leg and I can’t walk. Please don’t leave the agent who sent me here (Russia). He is the one who got me into all this. He kept me here without work for 25 days. In the name of job in Russia, I was forcefully dragged into the war.”

Owaisi wrote a letter to the Indian Embassy
On the request of the family, Owaisi has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Russia for help in bringing back Ahmed. In his letter to the embassy, ​​the AIMIM chief has appealed to the authorities to take immediate action for the safe return of Ahmed.

What did the Indian Embassy tell?
Tadu Mamu, counselor at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, responded by saying that the embassy has shared Ahmed’s details with Russian authorities. And they have been requested to ensure his early release from the Russian Army and safe return to India. “The Embassy is following all cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army on priority basis,” the official said.
