If your dreams are big and your courage is strong, then even difficulties cannot stop you. This is the story of Ramesh Gholap, a boy born in a small village of Maharashtra, who fulfilled his dream of becoming an IAS officer by fighting poverty, helplessness and diseases like polio.
When Ramesh was young, he got polio in his left leg. The financial condition of the family was very weak. Father had a small bicycle shop, but his addiction to alcohol ruined everything. The situation became such that the mother had to sell bangles on the road, and Ramesh used to sit with her with his polio-stricken leg.
Father’s death and a journey of Rs 2
Ramesh had studied till 12th standard in the village itself. During this time his father passed away. On receiving the news, he wanted to go home immediately, but did not have even Rs 2 in his pocket. There was no money even to pay the bus fare. At that moment something broke inside him, but that same pain lit the fire within him to do something.
Mother became the biggest inspiration
All the responsibilities of the house had fallen on the mother. She would sell bangles from morning till evening and Ramesh would remain busy in studies. Mother always says that son, do not leave studies. This is your weapon. After 12th, Ramesh did diploma to become a teacher and started teaching children in the village. This helped in covering the household expenses and he also completed his BA degree.
Preparation started by taking loan
Ramesh’s dream was to become an IAS. He left his job and started preparing for UPSC diligently. In the year 2010, he took the examination for the first time, but did not get success. Then his mother borrowed money from the village people so that Ramesh could go to the city and study. After reaching Pune, he started preparation without coaching. He studied 12 to 14 hours every day, because he knew that hard work was the only way to defeat poverty.

After hard work and struggle, Ramesh passed the UPSC exam in 2012. He got 287th rank and was selected as an IAS officer in the disabled quota.
