Why Stepping Out Of AC Into Heat Can Make You Sick: Amidst the scorching heat, AC has now become a necessity for people. Be it home, office or travelling, most of the people are spending hours in the air conditioner. But health experts say that after staying in AC for a long time, suddenly being exposed to strong sunlight and hot air can take a toll on the body. This is the reason why these days many people are facing problems like sore throat, dry cough, headache, fatigue and dizziness.
Why does the effect occur?
According to a report by Dr. Nilesh Sonawane, Consultant Pulmonologist, Apollo Clinic, people often mistake these symptoms for viral infection or summer cold, whereas in many cases it is due to the indoor air quality changing from AC and lack of moisture in the air. According to the doctor, “Air conditioner reduces both the heat and humidity of the room. Due to this, the air in the room becomes very dry, which directly affects the throat and respiratory system.” Experts say that as soon as a person comes out after sitting in AC for a long time, he has to face strong hot air and sudden changes in temperature. This change is no less than a shock for the body. Especially for those people who sit in AC for hours in the office and then go out directly in the afternoon sun.
What problems do we have to face?
According to doctors, the body takes time to adjust to the sudden change in temperature. During this time, problems like dehydration, headache, weakness, dizziness and sometimes heat exhaustion may occur. For people who already have asthma, allergies or breathing problems, this situation can increase further problems. Health experts advise that one should avoid going in the sun immediately after coming out of the AC, if possible, first stay in a place with normal temperature for a few minutes, so that the body can gradually prepare itself according to the weather outside.

What things should be kept in mind?
Keeping the body hydrated is also considered very important. Because staying in AC for a long time increases dryness in both body and skin. Many people do not even realize this and start feeling lack of water in the body as soon as they go out. Doctors say that one should keep drinking water little by little throughout the day. Coconut water, lemon water, buttermilk and fresh fruit juices can help in maintaining the balance of electrolytes in the body.
Experts also advise to wear light and loose cotton clothes in summer. Along with this, use an umbrella, hat or scarf while going out. At the same time, one should avoid drinking ice cold water or drinks immediately after coming back from strong sunlight, because this can increase the irritation and discomfort in the throat.
