Yoga Nidra is considered beneficial for reducing stress, inducing good sleep and keeping the mind calm, but does it also benefit people who suffer epileptic-like seizures even though they do not actually have epilepsy?
To know the answer to this question, Dr. Manjari Tripathi, Professor of Neurology Department, AIIMS Delhi and her team conducted a research. The main author of this study is Dr. Saranya B. Is Gomathi. In this study conducted on 50 patients, it was found that the condition of the patients definitely improved, but there was no different benefit from doing Yoga Nidra along with the treatment. This research has been published in the international medical journal Epilepsy & Behavior.
What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a technique of yoga in which a person lies down comfortably, closes his eyes and follows the instructions given by the instructor or audio. In this, attention is paid to breathing, the body is completely relaxed and an attempt is made to calm the mind. It is considered helpful in reducing stress, anxiety and sleep problems.
Research was done on which disease?
This research was done on a disease called Functional Dissociative Seizures (FDS). In this disease, the patient suffers from epilepsy-like seizures, but on examination it is found that he does not have epilepsy. That means seizures look like epilepsy, but their cause is something else. For this reason, many times patients continue to be treated for a long time considering it to be epilepsy. This disease is accurately identified through a special test called Video-EEG.
How was the study?
Between January 2021 and February 2022, doctors examined 72 patients. Of these, 50 patients were included in the research. First of all, all the patients were explained about their disease in simple language and given counselling. After this, 25 patients were given Yoga Nidra, while the remaining 25 patients were given a normal audio of the same time, which did not include the main techniques of Yoga Nidra. After this, all the patients were monitored for six months.
What was found in the research?
After six months, good improvement was seen in the patients of both groups. Patients had fewer seizures than before. Their anxiety and depression also reduced and everyday life became better than before, but the patients who did Yoga Nidra did not get any different benefit compared to the other group. That is, adding Yoga Nidra to the treatment did not yield better results in this study.
On which people was the study conducted?
Most of the patients included in the study were young women. About 66 percent of the patients were earlier treated as epilepsy. At the same time, most of the patients mentioned things like study pressure, domestic stress or family problems. More than half of the patients were also suffering from mental problems like anxiety and depression.
What did the doctors say?
Doctors who did the research say that no harm or side effects were seen from Yoga Nidra in this study. However, it could not be proved that adding Yoga Nidra to the treatment of this disease provides more benefits to the patients than it does separately. Therefore, there is a need to conduct research on this topic on a large scale and for a long time.
