Various claims are being made across the country regarding E20 petrol, from engine failure to reduction in mileage. Now Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has given a big statement on this on Tuesday (July 7). He challenged those who raised questions on ethanol mixed petrol and asked them to name even one car in which there was a problem due to this fuel.
During the ‘Developed India’ program, Gadkari said, India’s dependence on coal, petrol etc. is an economic burden. Due to this, Rs 22 lakh crore is spent annually on fuel import and it is also a threat to the environment, hence it is very important to adopt clean energy for the progress of the country. He said, ‘There has been no case of any car having problems due to E20 petrol. Is there any car in the country which has faced any problem due to the use of E20 petrol? Just name one.
‘The campaign is being run by paying money’
The Union Transport Minister alleged, ‘Rumours are being spread about the implementation of more ethanol blended petrol. This campaign is being run by paying money. He further said, ‘India has already achieved the target of 20 percent ethanol blended petrol. This has reduced dependence on imported crude oil and also reduced carbon emissions. Ethanol is made from biomass like sugarcane, corn or rice.
Responded to allegations of benefiting family members
Gadkari also responded to allegations that companies of his family members are involved in the production of ethanol and that is why he is insisting on introducing petrol with more ethanol. The Union Minister said that his family members have sugar mills and their companies are not dependent on ethanol production.

Mention of benefits to farmers of UP-Bihar
He said that there is abundance of ethanol in the country, hence the step to make ethanol from maize has brought additional income of Rs 45,000 crore to the farmers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Gadkari said, ‘When we decided to make ethanol from maize, the market price of maize was Rs 1200 per quintal and the minimum support price was Rs 1800 per quintal. After this decision, the price of maize increased to Rs 2800 per quintal. He said, ‘An additional Rs 45,000 crore came into the pockets of farmers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.’
