In the politics of Assam, the university that has produced 7 Chief Ministers is Guwahati’s Cotton University (formerly Cotton College). It would not be wrong to call this university the center of Assam politics. It was established in 1901 even before independence. At that time people had to go to Kolkata for higher education. In such a situation, the then Chief Commissioner Sir Henry Stedman Cotton laid its foundation, and it was officially recognized as a university by Himanta Biswa Sharma in 2017.

  • Jogendra Nath Hazarika: He was the Chief Minister from 09 September 1979 to 11 December 1979.

Role of Cotton College in the beginning of politics of Himanta Biswa Sharma

Cotton College (now Cotton University) played a big role in the beginning of politics of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. From here he obtained Bachelor’s (BA) degree in Political Science in 1990 and Master’s (MA) degree in the same subject in 1992. He was also very active in student politics here and was the General Secretary of the Student Union of Cotton College thrice between 1988 and 1992.
