Continuous torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam have created a dire flood situation in Dhemaji and Jonai. The swollen rivers have completely disrupted life. Many villages have been submerged, road and rail links have been badly affected, while thousands of people have been affected by the floods. The biggest impact of the flood has been on the railway bridge built on the Simen river in Dhemaji district. Due to rapid erosion of the river and rising water level, a part of the bridge was damaged, after which the operation of trains on this railway line was suspended in view of safety. Due to this, the rail services of the area have been completely affected.
Contact with many villages lost due to washing away of 300 meter long iron bridge
At the same time, about 300 meter long iron bridge built on Kemi river in Jonai area was washed away in the strong current. This bridge was the main connectivity route connecting Kemi-Old Jelom area with Jonai Sadar. Road connectivity of many villages has been completely broken due to the washing away of the bridge, due to which relief and rescue operations are facing difficulties.
A painful accident also came to light amid the flood. Four people were washed away in the strong current of the river, out of which three were rescued safely with the help of local people and rescue team. However, one person is still missing. Despite bad weather and strong current, the search continues.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), about 16 thousand people in 69 villages of four revenue circles of Dhemaji district have been affected by the floods. Hundreds of families have been evacuated to safe places and relief camps, while a large number of agricultural lands have been submerged.

In view of the serious flood situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on separate phones and took information about the situation arising out of flash flood and incessant rains.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he gave detailed information to the Home Minister about the ongoing relief and rehabilitation works in the state. He said that Amit Shah has assured all possible help and cooperation from the Central Government, so that relief can be provided to the affected people soon. The Chief Minister also expressed his gratitude to the Home Minister for expressing concern over the flood situation in Dhemaji and assuring him of assistance.
Severe flood situation in 12 districts of Arunachal
Meanwhile, torrential rains continued in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday (June 29, 2026), causing severe flood situation in about 12 districts of the state. Many roads have been damaged, public infrastructure has been heavily damaged and many people have also lost their lives. The rising water coming from Arunachal has made the flood situation more serious in the low-lying areas of Assam, especially Dhemaji and Jonai.
Meteorological Department issued alert of heavy rain
Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and emergency services and district administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations on war footing. Stranded people are being transported to safe places through boats and food, drinking water, medicines and other essential materials are being provided.
The weather department has predicted more heavy rain in the coming days. In such a situation, the administration has appealed to the people to be cautious, stay away from rivers and streams and travel only when absolutely necessary. At present, the priority of the administration is to speed up relief and rescue operations, search for missing people and provide all possible assistance to the affected people.
