Beer Consumption: Telangana is far ahead of all other states in terms of drinking beer in India. According to data from the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and excise departments of different states, Telangana consumes the most beer in the country.
Telangana leads in beer consumption
Telangana has become the largest beer consuming state in the country in terms of quantity. This trend is seen even more in the summer months. Due to the increasing heat, the demand for beer increases significantly. Beer sales in the state increase by 65% during heat waves. With this the daily consumption reaches 2.2 lakh to 2.3 lakh cases. The state’s popularity for beer consumption is reflected not only in sales figures but also in the spending patterns of consumers.

Highest expenditure on beer and liquor
The data shows that rural residents in Telangana spend an average of ₹3061 per capita annually on Indian-made foreign liquor and beer. This is the highest per capita expenditure on liquor in Indian states. Such spending reflects the role of liquor in the state’s consumer economy.
Hyderabad leads India’s beer market
Hyderabad is one of the largest centers of beer consumption in the country. This city has left Mumbai and Bengaluru behind in terms of beer sales.
Of the 972 licensed bars in Telangana, 645 bars are within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. This large number of bars and entertainment venues has played a big role in increasing the consumption levels.
Excise revenue at record level
The government gets huge revenue from the state’s rapidly growing liquor and beer market. There has been a tremendous increase in the excise revenue of Telangana in the last decade. Excise revenue has increased from approximately ₹ 10,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹ 36,493 crore in the financial year 2023-24. Sales increase even more during the festival season. Record liquor sales of ₹5,102 crore were recorded across the state in December 2025 alone.
