- US-Iranian MoU includes Lebanon conflict cessation point.
After a long conflict, an interim peace agreement has been reached between America and Iran. Along with this, talks have also taken place between the two sides in Switzerland recently, but the Israeli Prime Minister seems quite troubled by this closeness between America and Iran. In fact, Israel is worried whether the Trump administration is strengthening Iran’s position in Lebanon. Because of this concern, PM Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to remove Israeli troops from Lebanon.
This war in West Asia started with joint attacks on Iran by the US and Israel in February 2026, but now it has reached a point where Washington is engaged in constant talks with Tehran and Israel is stuck in a state of confusion regarding Lebanon.
Agreement signed between America and Iran last week
A 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed last week between the US and Iran to end the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the blockade situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which also includes one point on ending the conflict in Lebanon.
What was said about Lebanon in the agreement?
The first point of the draft said, ‘By signing this MoU, the US-Iran and all their allies in the current conflict declare an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. They resolve henceforth not to initiate any war or military operation against each other, to refrain from using force or threatening the use of force, and to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon.’
However, Israeli PM Netanyahu on Monday (June 22, 2026) ignored the US-Iran MOU and said that Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon as long as they feel the need for the safety of their citizens.
At the same time, Axios, quoting two Israeli sources, has reported that with the end of technical talks between Iran and the US in Switzerland on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), reports emerged that the Israeli government suspects that the US could strengthen Iran’s influence in Lebanon. This may affect Israel’s ability to take independent military action in the area.
America can put pressure on Israel- Israel
According to the report, Israeli officials are worried that the new agreement between Trump and Iran could weaken joint efforts between the US and Israel to weaken Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terrorist organization in Lebanon. Along with this, they also fear that now Washington can register its objection every time Israel plans a military attack in Lebanon and Trump can press for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Southern Lebanon.
Israeli sources say that Netanyahu is more concerned about the part related to Lebanon in the US-Iran interim agreement than the provisions related to Iran’s nuclear program. “Bibi (Netanyahu) is very upset about this,” a source told Axios.
