- Now the irregularities are being caught even before the examination.
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has used new technology this time to make the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 more secure and transparent than before. For the first time, the Commission examined the application form with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in which 569 such applications were found which were not correct as per the rules. All these forms were canceled even before the commencement of the examination.
Investigation done with the help of 15 years of records
UPSC said that records and data of the last 15 years were used to scrutinize the applications. With the help of AI, such cases were identified in which the same candidate had made multiple applications, more attempts were made than the prescribed limit or the application was filled by giving wrong information. After the completion of the investigation, all such applications were cancelled.
Face authentication happened for the first time
This year UPSC made another major change in the examination system. Face authentication of the candidates was done at the examination center about 30 minutes before the start of the examination. Apart from this, it has also been made mandatory to upload real time live photo from webcam or mobile while filling the application, so that the possibility of someone else taking the exam can be eliminated.
Identity information also obtained from Aadhaar number
The Commission had also given the option to the candidates to give Aadhaar number as per their wish. About 94 percent of the candidates gave their Aadhaar number at the time of application. This helped in matching the identities of the candidates and making the scrutiny of applications easier.

Answer sought from those who changed category
UPSC sent an email to about 43,497 candidates asking them the reason for the change in category. The Commission says that changing the category may affect the number of attempts of the candidate. Therefore, the candidates who changed the category were asked to give a clear reason for the same.
Errors are already being detected now
Earlier, in many cases, candidates violating the rules were caught during interviews or scrutiny of documents. But now with the help of AI and digital verification, such irregularities are coming to light even before the examination. This is expected to make the recruitment process more transparent, faster and reliable.
How many candidates applied?
About 8.18 lakh candidates had applied for UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. Out of these, about 4.49 lakh candidates appeared in the examination. Through AI based testing and new security system, the Commission has taken a big step towards making the examination process more fair and secure.
