In compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, Himachal Pradesh Education Department has issued important instructions regarding Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for all in-service teachers. In the letter issued by the Education Secretary, instructions have been given to the Director of School Education to prepare a list of teachers who have not yet passed TET and ensure necessary action.
Deadline extended after Supreme Court’s decision
According to the departmental letter, the Supreme Court, while hearing the review petition after the decision given in the case of Anjuman Ishaat-e-Taleem Trust vs. State of Maharashtra, has increased the time limit for acquiring TET qualification from two years to three years. Now it will be mandatory for eligible working teachers to pass TET by 31 August 2028.
List of teachers without TET will be ready
A list of all those teachers working under the Elementary Education Department who have not yet passed TET should be prepared. By issuing instructions to all Deputy Directors, Block Elementary Education Officers and school heads, it should be ensured that the concerned teachers pass TET before 31 August 2028. Special TET examinations should be organized for the working teachers in coordination with Himachal Pradesh School Education Board, Dharamshala.
Exam will be held twice a year
TET examination should be conducted at least twice a year and wide publicity of the examination program should be ensured. Instructions have been given to settle the matter on the basis of highest priority. The Supreme Court has made it clear that to maintain the quality of education, TET is a mandatory qualification and it will be necessary to obtain it by the prescribed time limit. The court has also said that there is no possibility of any additional relief being given after August 31, 2028. This order will affect thousands of working teachers of Himachal Pradesh who have not yet obtained TET qualification.

8727 order may weigh heavily on teacher
There are 8,727 teachers in government schools of Himachal Pradesh who have not passed TET. According to the order of the Supreme Court, it has been made mandatory for all these serving teachers to pass this examination by 31st August 2028. However, for teachers appointed in 2010 or before and whose retirement age is near, the orders may prove to be costly.
