West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to step down on Tuesday (April 5, 2026) after her party’s defeat in the assembly elections. He claimed that this election result is not the real mandate of the people but the result of a conspiracy. On the statement of TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee, BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia said that for the first time in the history of independent India, a Chief Minister has refused to resign despite losing the elections.

BJP targeted Mamata Banerjee

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, ‘By clinging to power, Mamata Banerjee is not only adopting an anarchist attitude, but she is also openly insulting the sentiments of the voters and the sanctity of the mandate. This is a complete breakdown of the constitutional system. Mamata Banerjee alleged that Trinamool Congress did not contest elections against BJP, rather its fight was with the Election Commission, which worked for BJP.

Mamta Banerjee refused to resign

He said, ‘The question of my resignation does not arise because our defeat was not due to the public mandate but due to a conspiracy. I am not defeated, I will not go to Lok Bhavan. They can take action as per constitutional norms. Mamata Banerjee alleged large-scale irregularities in the counting process, claiming that the mandate on nearly 100 seats was ‘robbed’ and counting was deliberately slowed down to demoralize her party.

Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Election Commission

Mamata Banerjee accused Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar of weakening the democratic rights of the people. He also announced the formation of a 10-member fact finding committee to visit the areas affected by post-poll violence and assess the ground situation. He termed the allegations of violence after the elections in 2021 as baseless. Banerjee said that after the election results, many leaders of the INDIA alliance of opposition parties contacted her and expressed solidarity.
