After a big mass movement against corruption, Aam Aadmi Party was started in the year 2012 with big personalities like Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav. As the party’s roots began to spread, internal differences and strategic decisions began to make some leaders uncomfortable. In its journey to becoming a national party, it not only saw many ups and downs, but also saw many big faces emerge.
At present, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha is seen joining the next number in this series. Today we will tell you which big faces have left the party since the inception of AAP.
Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav
Shanti Bhushan was one of the key founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party and was counted among the senior lawyers of the country. He had contributed Rs 1 crore at the time of establishment of the party in 2012. However, due to ideological differences and disagreement over the lack of internal democracy in the party, he distanced himself from the party in 2015.
AAP’s founding members Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav left the party in April 2015. In the year 2015, both of them had raised questions on the lack of internal democracy in the party and the working style of Arvind Kejriwal. AAP first removed both from the posts of the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) on 4 March 2015 and the National Executive Committee on 28 March 2015. On April 20, 2015, AAP expelled both of them on the grounds of indiscipline.
AAP’s founding member and social activist Shazia Ilmi resigned from the party on 24 May 2014. He had alleged lack of internal democracy and factionalism in the party. He said that the party did not respect the ideals of Swaraj.
After this, journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh left AAP on 15 August 2018. He had resigned citing personal reasons.
Kapil Mishra and Kumar Vishwas
Kapil Mishra, one of the early leaders of AAP, also soon started becoming disillusioned with the policies of the party. In 2017, he was a minister in the AAP government, but due to disagreements and conflict with the party top leadership, he was removed from the post of minister. After this, he was often seen cornering the party on every issue. Mishra joined BJP in the year 2019.
Kumar Vishwas had also left the party between the years 2018-2022. However, he never formally resigned from the party. His allegation was that the selection of candidates for Rajya Sabha was not done in a transparent manner and priority was given only on the basis of personal preference. He gradually distanced himself from the party due to ideological differences.
After this, Alka Lamba and HS Phulka also left AAP. These leaders had also left the party due to long standing differences and disagreements with the party leadership.
Swati Maliwal vs AAP
After this, the conflict between Swati Maliwal and AAP in the year 2024 was much talked about. He never officially left the party. In fact, Maliwal was considered one of Kejriwal’s trusted leaders. However, now Maliwal is vocal against the policies of the party. At present he is a Rajya Sabha MP.
Kailash Gehlot had also left us
Kailash Gehlot, who became MLA from Najafgarh on Aam Aadmi Party ticket in the 2020 elections, also left the party after the 2024 general elections. He joined BJP.
If we look at the history of the party, most of the leaders first had differences of opinion, then disillusionment and then separation. Now Raghav Chaddha’s name seems to be added to this list. Recently AAP has removed Chadha from the post of deputy leader of the party in Rajya Sabha. Regarding this, he has expressed his opinion against the party on social media.
Shazia Ilmi took a dig at AAP’s style
On the recent developments of AAP, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi threw light on this sequence through a video on social media. He took a dig at both AAP and Chadha. He said, ‘There is nothing surprising in this. fill as you like. This is what Raghav Chadha was doing. He was increasing his stature because of the party. So obviously, the party will show them to the appropriate place. Well, this is AAP’s textbook politics. This is an established pattern. He did the same to everyone.
Shazia further said, ‘Raghav Chaddha supported Kejriwal instead of supporting his mentors Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav. Even talked against Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, due to which Kejriwal would be happy. Today the same is happening with Chadha. Now it is no surprise that only those who live like a ‘spoon’ move ahead and only those people remain in the party who had no separate existence of their own. If Raghav Chadha’s stature has increased, Kejriwal is a person with dictatorial and insecure thinking, so this thing will displease him.
However, Raghav Chadha has not yet officially left the party nor has the party expelled him. At present, his removal from important posts and ban on speaking indicates that all is not well between him and the top leadership.
