The 14-point agreement signed between America and Iran on June 18, 2026, in which the most important condition was – ‘Iran will never buy, develop, or manufacture nuclear weapons.’ Trump called it the biggest success of the agreement at ‘99.9%’. But the question is why America wants to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear country, can Iran really leave America behind and become the most powerful country in the world…
Why does America want to stop Iran from making nuclear weapons?
There are 5 big reasons behind this attitude of America:
- This is the main reason for war: Trump has said many times that stopping Iran from making a nuclear bomb was the biggest reason for this war. When America and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February 2026, their objective was to end Iran’s nuclear program. Trump also said that this agreement builds a ‘wall’ against Iran, so that it can never acquire nuclear weapons.
- Better deal than Obama deal of 2015: In 2015, Trump had described former President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) as a ‘road’ that leads Iran to a nuclear bomb. In 2018, he withdrew America from that agreement. Now he wants to make a strong agreement in his name, which will be better than Obama’s agreement and will keep Iran away from nuclear bomb forever.
- Eliminating Iran’s ‘threshold’ status: According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), before the war, Iran had 440.9 kg of 60% enriched uranium, which is enough to make 10 nuclear bombs. Iran is the only country which has enriched uranium up to 60% without making a nuclear bomb. The distance from 60% to 90% (weapons-grade) is very small and this is America’s biggest concern. America wants the highly enriched uranium possessed by Iran to either be sent out of the country, or destroyed, or diluted.
- Preventing Iran from ‘proxy war’: Trump had said at the beginning of the war that another priority of his was to stop Iran from funding proxy groups like Hezbollah in the region. With the nuclear bomb, Iran can give even more courage and security to these groups.
- Preserving global leader image: If Iran had made a nuclear bomb despite American attacks, it would have proved to be a major failure of American military power. America wants to show the world that it can prevent its enemies from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Can Iran overtake America and become the most powerful country in the world?
The straight answer is no. At least not in the coming few years. Let us understand from the comparison of America and Iran:
| Parameters | America | iran |
| nuclear weapons | 5,042 | 0 (now) |
| Military Budget (Annual) | 1 trillion dollars | 7.5 billion dollars |
| aircraft carrier | 11 | 0 |
| Satellite and Technology | at the forefront of the world | Limited |
| global military bases | more than 800 | 0 |
| economy | 30.2 trillion dollars | 356 billion dollars |
Experts believe that Iran can never leave America ‘behind’ because:
- America already has thousands of nuclear weapons. It will take months for Iran to make even just one bomb.
- America’s military strength, air force, navy, satellites, drones, and intelligence network is many times more than Iran.
- America’s GDP is about 30.2 trillion dollars, while Iran’s GDP is 356 billion dollars ($0.36 trillion). That means America’s GDP is 86 times bigger than Iran’s.
- America has strong alliances like NATO, G7 and Quad. Iran has limited allies (Russia, to a lesser extent China).
However, Iran can become a ‘regional power’ and this is America’s biggest concern. With nuclear weapons, Iran can further strengthen its influence in the Middle East. With this, it can further strengthen its hold on strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
What is America most afraid of?
America’s biggest fear is not about Iran building nuclear weapons, but about the consequences:
- Regional Nuclear Race: America fears that after Iran makes a nuclear bomb, all the Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt will start a race to make nuclear weapons. This will turn the entire area into a nuclear crisis.
- Israel’s existential threat: Iran’s leaders have repeatedly talked about ‘wiping Israel off the map’. With nuclear weapons, these threats can also become reality.
- Iran’s complete occupation of the Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s real weapon is the Strait of Hormuz. With nuclear weapons, Iran can close this route at any time. Due to this, oil prices will skyrocket across the world.
- End of ‘Petrodollar’: By becoming a nuclear power, Iran can trade oil in yuan or rubles instead of dollars. This will weaken the credibility of the US dollar and cause huge losses to the American economy.
- Nuclear weapons to terrorist groups: America fears that Iran may give its nuclear weapons technology to groups like Hezbollah, Hamas or Houthi. This will make terrorism even more dangerous.
- Shock to the image of ‘global leader’: Before the war, America attacked Iran so that its nuclear program could be destroyed. But if Iran still develops nuclear weapons, it will be a major blow to American military power.
Will this agreement stop Iran from making a nuclear bomb?
Trump himself said that if Iran broke any condition, ‘we will return to dropping bombs.’ Foreign affairs expert and retired JNU professor A.K. According to Pasha,
- The agreement does not contain any clear solution to the disposal of Iran’s existing 60% enriched uranium. There is talk of diluting uranium, but the questions of when, how and to what extent it will happen are still unresolved.
- Iran has kept its missile program out of the agreement.
- Iran says it will ‘never give up the right to enrich uranium’.
That means this agreement is not a guarantee to stop Iran from making nuclear weapons. This is just a ‘chance’. If a final agreement is not reached within 60 days, war may break out again. If Iran secretly makes nuclear weapons, it will prove to be the biggest failure for America.
