Foods That Can Slowly Damage Your Kidneys: Kidney is one of those organs of the body which does not make much noise in the beginning. Working silently throughout the day, it filters the blood, removes toxins from the body, maintains water balance and helps control blood pressure. But poor diet gradually increases the pressure on it and its signs are not clearly visible for a long time.

Today, doctors all over the world are expressing concern about the increasing cases of kidney related diseases. According to the American organization National Institute of Health, 1 in every 7 people in America is affected by chronic kidney disease and many people are not even aware of it. Experts believe that the increasing trend of processed food, excess salt, sweet drinks and high-protein diet is becoming a major reason for this.

But Anshul Singh, team lead, Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Artemis Hospitals, says that excess protein can put extra pressure on the kidneys, especially in people who already have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney problems.

Packaged food poses a big threat to kidneys

DT, Chief Dietitian of Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram. Parul Yadav told TOI that packaged food has become the biggest hidden danger. Chips, instant noodles and frozen foods contain high amounts of sodium, preservatives and phosphates, which can damage the kidneys over time. Research by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has also linked excess salt to high blood pressure and kidney stress.

If you eat outside food, be careful

Eating too much salt like pickles, namkeen, sauces and outside food can gradually weaken the kidney’s ability to function. According to the World Health Organization, an adult should not consume more than 5 grams of salt a day, but most people consume much more salt than this through processed foods and restaurant meals. Apart from this, sweet drinks and soda are also considered harmful for the kidneys. According to Parul Yadav, continuous drinking of soft drinks increases the risk of obesity and diabetes, which are major causes of kidney disease. A study by the National Institute of Health has also linked sugary drinks to an increased risk of kidney damage.

Why are spinach, beetroot, chocolate and nuts not healthy?

Another interesting thing is that not every healthy thing is right for every person. Parul Yadav explains that oxalate-rich foods like spinach, beetroot, chocolate and nuts can increase the risk of kidney stones in some people. Experts believe that the kidneys do not need any miraculous diet, but a balanced diet. Fresh home-made food, adequate water, less salt and less processed foods help the most in keeping the kidneys healthy for a long time.
