NEET Government Medical Colleges: Every year lakhs of students appear for NEET UG exam and the first choice of most of them is AIIMS. But if you do not get a seat in AIIMS, it does not mean that your dream of becoming a doctor is over. There are many such government medical colleges in the country, which are considered no less than any big institute in terms of education, hospital training, faculty and placement. Admission in these colleges is also available mainly on the basis of NEET UG marks.
Medical education experts say that students should not focus only on AIIMS. Many old government medical colleges have been producing excellent doctors for decades. The biggest features of these institutes are low fees, experienced faculty, clinical exposure in big hospitals and good study environment.

Puducherry-based Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is counted among the most prestigious government medical institutions in the country. Here, along with modern medical facilities, special emphasis is also given to research. Earlier there used to be a separate entrance examination, but now students are selected through NEET UG.
If we talk about Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) has been the first choice of medical students for a long time. Being connected to the major government hospitals of the capital, the students here get a lot of experience in treatment and working with patients. Similarly, Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) are also known across the country for their high quality medical education.

Pune’s Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is also among the most prestigious medical colleges in the country. Admission here is through NEET, but after this the candidates also have to go through an additional selection process. After completing their studies here, students get the opportunity to serve in the armed forces.
Varanasi based Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is also a big name in the field of medical education. Along with studies here, one gets the benefit of research and super specialty medical facilities. Madras Medical College (MMC) Chennai and University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) Delhi have also been producing excellent doctors for years. Grant Government Medical College (GJ Hospital) of Mumbai is one of the oldest medical colleges in the country.
How to get admission
Admission in all these colleges is based on the merit of NEET UG. After this, students are allotted seats through All India Quota (AIQ) and state counseling of the respective states. Therefore, just getting a good rank is not enough, but correct information about the counseling process, preference of colleges and seat matrix is also necessary.
