Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev on Wednesday resigned from the party and Rajya Sabha membership. This has dealt another blow to the party led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which is struggling with internal divisions after the defeat in the state assembly elections. Amidst speculations about joining BJP, Sushmita Dev has cited ‘personal and political reasons’ for her resignation. She had also joined Congress earlier and only a few years ago.

He met Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan and resigned from the membership of the Upper House. He met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at his residence. After this meeting, Sushmita Dev said that she has not only resigned from Trinamool Congress, but has also resigned from Rajya Sabha. She said, ‘It is my personal decision what kind of politics I want to do and who should be my leader. I have my own reasons and that is why I have taken this decision.
Who is Sushmita Dev?
Sushmita Dev’s grandfather Satindra Mohan Dev, who belonged to an influential political family of Assam, was a freedom fighter. He served as Chairman of Silchar Municipality Board for a long time. Later he also became the Health Minister of Assam. Sushmita Dev’s father Santosh Mohan Dev was active in the world of sports along with politics. He represented Silchar parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha a record 6 times and held the post of Steel Minister in the Central Government. Sushmita Dev’s mother Bhitika Dev was elected MLA from Assam.
Sushmita Dev took a degree in Political Science from the famous Miranda House College of Delhi University in 1993. After this he completed his law studies from Thomas Valley University, London. He obtained a Masters degree in Corporate Law from King’s College, London. Sushmita Dev is a registered member of Delhi Bar Council.
While studying in Delhi, she joined the Congress student organization NSUI and also contested the student union elections in Miranda House. He started mainstream politics from his home state Assam. He started his political career from Silchar Municipality, which is the second largest municipal body in Assam.
