Vantara, the wildlife conservation initiative founded by Reliance Industries executive director Anant Ambani, has unveiled plans to set up ‘Vantara University’ in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Billed as the world’s first integrated global university dedicated to wildlife conservation and veterinary science, the institute aims to set a new standard in specialized education.
This university is based on the principles of animal welfare, scientific innovation and long-term conservation. It seeks to prepare future professionals in the fields of veterinary medicine, wildlife care and conservation, taking inspiration from the knowledge traditions of India.
Ambani takes inspiration from ancient Nalanda University
Speaking on the initiative, Ambani said the university was inspired by his personal experiences of seeing animals in distress and recognizing the shortcomings in the care systems. He further said that this institute takes inspiration from the spirit of the ancient Nalanda University and the philosophy of “Aa No Bhadraah Kratvo Yantu Vishwatah” i.e. ‘Let welfare thoughts come to us from all directions’, so as to create a generation committed to the protection of life.
The symbolic design of the installation site reflects this vision. Two blocks of ‘Bijolia Sandstone’ obtained from the ancient Vindhya geological formation associated with Nalanda were included in this setting, underscoring India’s enduring tradition of learning.
The foundation ceremony, organized as per Hindu rituals, was attended by prominent personalities from the world of education, conservation, science and public life, including Ambani’s teachers and gurus. A key ritual involved placing soil, water and stones collected from biodiversity-rich areas across India, from forests and wetlands to arid regions and Himalayan landscapes, representing the university’s roots in the country’s ecological diversity and natural heritage.
Vision and global educational ambitions
Vantara University is designed as a multidisciplinary center that combines real-world conservation practices with academic learning. Leveraging Vantara’s operational experiences, the Institute aims to translate regional experience into structured academic programmes, professional training and globally relevant frameworks.
The university plans to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship and specialized courses in subjects such as wildlife medicine and surgery, nutrition, behavioral science, genetics, epidemiology, forest health, conservation policy and animal habitat design. These programs will be organized in particular colleges as per the existing capabilities of Vantara.
Scholarships will be introduced to help socially and economically backward students, thereby ensuring wider access to the institute’s facilities.
The campus will have advanced academic and clinical infrastructure as well as international collaboration and residential facilities. It will prioritize action-oriented research focused on strengthening wildlife health, conservation practices and animal welfare. The educational model will integrate both ‘in-situ’ and ‘ex-situ’ conservation, linking natural ecosystems with scientific care and long-term management strategies.
Efforts for conservation education and innovation
The launch of the university is part of broader efforts to expand conservation-focused education in India. During the ceremony, Vantara announced initiatives such as the ‘Vantara University Founding Fellows’ program and the ‘Every Life Matters’ scholarship, and called for linking knowledge with security.
More than just an educational institution, Vantara University reflects an approach that combines compassion with scientific rigor. Its stated vision emphasizes that protection of wildlife requires not only awareness but also strong systems, skilled professionals and sustained institutional support.
