Can AI Detect Heart Failure Early: Heart failure is a serious disease, which affects millions of people around the world. This happens when the heart is unable to pump blood properly in the body. In advanced stages of the disease, it can even become fatal, but the biggest challenge is that it is not easy to identify it in time. The biggest problem facing doctors is that advanced heart failure is detected late in many patients, due to which they do not get treatment at the right time. Now a new research has raised hopes that Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI can change this situation.
What technology is used now
This study has been done by scientists from Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell Tech, Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian, which was published in the journal npj Digital Medicine. At present, to identify advanced heart failure, doctors resort to a special test called cardiopulmonary exercise testing. This test measures heart and lung function, but it requires special equipment and trained staff, which is available only in large hospitals. For this reason many patients are deprived of this test.
What came out in the research
In the new research, scientists have created such an AI system, which can estimate the severity of the disease by analyzing the ultrasound test of the heart, echocardiography and the general medical records of the patient. The special thing is that this technique can estimate important parameters like peak VO2, which is usually measured only through CPET.

Using data of 1,000 heart failure patients
To prepare this system, data of about 1,000 heart failure patients was used, which included information related to ultrasound video, blood flow and heart valve activities. After this, it was tested on 127 new patients, where this AI model identified high-risk patients with about 85 percent accuracy. The researcher says that this technology can be easily used in everyday medical needs, because it uses the same data which is already available. This will make it possible to identify those patients who were being ignored till now.
However, the scientist has also admitted that before implementing this technology on a large scale, testing on a larger scale is necessary. It is equally important to ensure the reliability and security of AI systems.
