Virat Kohli admitted that despite playing a key role in Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)’s comfortable five-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 23rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, he is still not fully fit.
Chasing 147, Kohli played a brilliant inning of 49 runs as RCB achieved the target in just 15.1 overs and regained the top of the points table. However, the former captain told that for the last few days he has been suffering from both knee problem and illness.
Speaking to the broadcasters after the match, Kohli said, “I am feeling much better now compared to the last match. I am still not 100 per cent fit. I had a little pain in my knee in the last match. Health-wise too, I have been feeling a little bad for the last four-five days, so, I am slowly getting back to my old rhythm. Today I started well, so I was happy with my energy level. However, I wanted my innings to be better.” Carry on and finish the match. Sometimes you have to take the conditions into account. The pitch had become very slow and I just wanted to continue playing in the same style, but in the end, maybe I should have finished the match.”
Earlier in the evening, RCB bowlers laid the foundation of victory by restricting LSG to 146 runs. Rasikh Salam Dar performed brilliantly by taking four wickets, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar took three wickets. In this way the host team kept the visiting team under pressure throughout the innings.
Talking about the changing nature of T20 cricket, Kohli stressed the importance of adapting to the conditions.
He said, “Well, for me it also depends on the situation and the circumstances. Not every match is going to be 230, 240 runs. We understand that the game is growing very well, that the demands of today’s game are quite different, but you always have to keep an eye on the conditions and also see how people play under pressure. We are still in the first half of the tournament. From the second half, the matches will get even tougher, and there will be more pressure on people than now. There will be more pressure. So when the freedom is lost, then the game’s intelligence has to be used, which I think will prove beneficial for the teams.”
