Who is Dr. Subrata Gupta?

Dr. Subrata Gupta is a resident of West Bengal and has been an IAS officer of Bengal cadre of 1990 batch. He worked in different administrative positions for about 35 years and held important responsibilities at both the state and central levels. He also worked in important administrative positions in the Left parties government and later in the Trinamool Congress government.

Dr. Subrata Gupta has worked on different important posts in West Bengal in his administrative career. Dr. Subrata Gupta has been the District Magistrate of Bardhaman and Jalpaiguri districts, where he supervised the local administration and development work. Apart from this, Dr. Subrata Gupta has also been the Managing Director of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, where he successfully supervised the country’s first underground water metro project. Along with this, he also held important responsibilities as Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary in departments like Science and Technology Department and Caste Certificate Department. Throughout his career, he worked in 27 different administrative and policy making positions.

Dr. Subrata Gupta’s role in the election process

Before the 2026 assembly elections, the name of Dr. Subrata Gupta came into discussion the most. He was made a special role observer by the Election Commission. During this time, he supervised the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the electoral rolls, his work making the election process thorough, fair and transparent. After the elections, soon after the change of power in the state, the West Bengal government appointed Dr. Subrata Gupta as advisor to Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari. In which his responsibilities are to help in policy decisions, provide guidance in departmental coordination and administrative reforms, and advise on matters related to governance and good governance. With the approval of the Governor, this appointment came into effect with immediate effect.

Dr. Subrata Gupta’s salary

As advisors to the Chief Minister, the salary of retired IAS officers is decided as per the rules of the state government. Generally it can be between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh per month, which also includes various allowances and facilities. Apart from this, while holding this post, he gets the opportunity to play an important role in political and administrative decisions.
