India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman on Sunday said young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s ability to understand the game has “improved significantly” in the last six months. He said that the growing maturity of the 15-year-old batsman has helped him a lot in handling pressure situations in the initial phase of his international career.
Suryavanshi gave a brilliant performance on the Zimbabwe tour, giving a befitting reply to his critics. He played a key role in India winning the series 3-0 with a 35-run victory in the third and final T20 International. For this performance he received both ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ awards.
“The most impressive thing is the way he has developed as a person,” Laxman said in the post-match press conference. His maturity, understanding and awareness of the game have increased tremendously in the last six months. This is the reason why he is able to handle difficult situations well.

Suryavanshi scored 151 runs in three innings at an average of 50.33. His brilliant inning of 81 runs in the last match of the series became the foundation of India’s victory.
This performance came after his disappointing debut tour against England, where he scored innings of 13, 14 and 15 and was dropped from the fifth and final T20I. India had to face defeat 0-4 in that series.
Laxman, who is taking charge of the Indian team on this tour due to head coach Gautam Gambhir being given rest amid the busy international schedule, said, “He (Suryavanshi) played the Under-19 World Cup and established his dominance in the IPL within four-five months. We know how difficult the level of IPL is. The way he improved himself against the best bowlers not only in India but in the world and progressed as an international cricketer shows his talent and potential.
He said that the desire to continuously improve oneself is clearly visible in Suryavanshi. Laxman said that despite being injured, he wanted to contribute to the team by remaining on the field.
He said, “We must also remember that he is just 15 years old and wants to improve himself in every aspect of the game. Even in today’s match, he was fully active while fielding. Even after getting injured, he wanted to stay on the field, but our physio asked him to come out. This shows how much desire he has to make every possible contribution to the team.
