India is ready to reinvigorate relations with Bangladesh by adopting a ‘forward-looking approach’. Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman on Monday (April 6, 2026) and gave this message.
The meeting came at a time when India and Bangladesh are making efforts to reinvigorate bilateral ties after Tariq Rahman became Prime Minister as a result of the victory of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the parliamentary elections held in February. Earlier, during the tenure of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, there was a lot of tension in the relations between the two countries.

The Indian High Commissioner also said that India is committed to working closely with the Government and people of Bangladesh in a positive, constructive and forward-looking approach and on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.
Government news agency BSS quoted the Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson as saying that Prannoy Verma paid a courtesy call on Rahman at the Cabinet Division office of Bangladesh Secretariat here. However, no detailed information was given immediately in this regard. However, officials with knowledge of the meeting said the ambassador told Rahman that India and Bangladesh should convert their geographical proximity into new opportunities by building strong economies, connectivity and increasing cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Several dignitaries, including Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pawan Badhe were present in the meeting. The High Commissioner’s meeting came a day before Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s visit to New Delhi, where he is likely to meet his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
Since Rahman’s BNP came to power in the elections held on February 12, India has expressed its desire to strengthen ties again with Dhaka. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented the Indian government at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected BNP government on 17 February and brought with him a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written in his letter, ‘I take this opportunity to invite you, Dr. Zubaida Rehman and your daughter Zaima to visit India at a convenient time with mutual consent. You are heartily welcome to India.
