Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was laid to rest on Thursday (July 9, 2026) at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. A crowd of millions of people gathered in the city of Mashhad for Khamenei’s funeral procession, carrying Iranian flags and photos of the late leader. People swore revenge on America, waving red posters with revolutionary slogans. Many protesters raised slogans against US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei passed away

According to CNBC report, lakhs of people also waved black flags at the place where he was buried. Khamenei’s mortal remains were transported from Iraq to Mashhad, Iran on the morning of 9 July. Iran had also released a video of the plane reaching Mashhad. Before being laid to rest, Khamenei’s mortal remains were taken to Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, where religious rituals related to him were performed. The process of Khamenei’s funeral started from Iran’s capital Tehran. After this, religious programs were organized in Qom city the next day. His body was later taken to Iraq, where last rites and religious ceremonies took place in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

War erupts between America and Iran

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been buried at a time when tensions between America and Iran have once again increased. America rained rain on Iran for two consecutive days, in response to which Tehran has claimed to target American bases located in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf gave a stern warning to America. He said that the operation of the Strait of Hormuz will be according to Iran’s terms and not on the basis of American threats. He clearly said that if America attacks, it will also get a reply.

Explosions in coastal areas of Iran

Several explosions were heard in the coastal areas of Bandar Abbas Port City of Iran on Thursday afternoon. According to Iran’s news agency Mehr, these sounds were heard around the southern coast of the city at around 2 pm local time (4 pm Indian time). It is believed that these blasts were caused by firing or military action in some parts of the Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz.
