The stir regarding the post of Chief Minister has intensified in Kerala Congress. KPCC President Sunny Joseph said on Sunday (10 May 2026) that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will soon announce the name of the next Chief Minister of Kerala. He told that the top leadership of the party has already talked to the three main contenders for the post of Chief Minister.
Speaking to the media after returning from New Delhi, Sunny Joseph said that he does not think there is a need for another round of discussion with state leaders on this issue. However, he did not tell when the name of the Chief Minister would be announced. He only said that all the leaders have been asked to avoid any kind of controversy or rhetoric. When he was asked whether talks would be held with allies of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in this regard, he said that this decision would be taken only by the Congress high command.

Who is in the race for the post of Chief Minister?
According to party sources, the discussion between Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and senior Congress leader AK Antony can play an important role in the selection of the Chief Minister. At present, KC Venugopal, VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala are considered to be the biggest contenders in the race for the post of Chief Minister. Supporters of the three leaders consider their respective claims strong. The Venugopal camp is confident that the Congress leadership will give more importance to the opinion of the legislature party. Satheesan’s supporters say that his popularity among the public and the support of UDF allies are strengthening their case.
Ramesh Chennithala can also stake claim
Ramesh Chennithala is also said to be very optimistic about his claim. It is believed that on the basis of his long political experience and seniority, he is hopeful that this time the party leadership may give him a chance. According to sources, both VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala are satisfied that the high command gave them full opportunity to present their views in detail. Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the final decision of the Congress leadership.
