Today, Monday (22 June) in Aliganj, Lucknow, the lives of hundreds of families changed forever. The same building where students used to come to dream of their future turned into a death trap within minutes. 15 people died in the massive fire, most of whom are said to be students. According to eyewitnesses, coaching and library were going on on the first floor of the building when the fire broke out. Suddenly smoke spread throughout the building. The students trapped inside were looking out of the windows and pleading for help. What the people standing below saw, they probably won’t be able to forget for the rest of their lives.

Om Prakash Verma was passing by in his car at that time. He told, “I saw that smoke was coming out of the building. The children were looking outside with the windows open. We stopped the car and started trying to take them out. There was an electric cable hanging in front. With the help of that, we took out five children.” Even today his voice trembles remembering that scene. “Four boys and a girl came out in front of me. One boy somehow reached down after getting burnt in the fire. But many children were still trapped inside.”

Live: 15 children have died so far in Lucknow fire, eyewitnesses said – fire engines came late

The fire spread so fast that many students were left with no way out. Some jumped from the second floor to save their lives. Some locked themselves in the bathroom, hoping that the smoke would not reach there. But luck could not favor everyone. Another eyewitness Aman says, “When we reached, smoke was coming out from the entire building. We called the police and fire brigade continuously. One girl and five boys were taken out with the help of a wire. But after the fire, a young man jumped straight from the top. His spine was broken and both his legs were seriously injured.”

The fire was so severe that the rescue team had to break the wall behind the building. Many bodies were taken out through the same route. The walls of the houses behind were also broken and the children were taken out. The entire area was immersed in mourning amidst smoke, screams and chaos. By evening, a crowd of family members had gathered outside the hospitals. Someone was calling the name of his son, someone was wandering here and there in search of his daughter. Many mobile phones kept ringing continuously, but there was no one to answer them.

This is the story of 15 unfulfilled dreams, who reached that building with the hope of job, career and a better future. But instead of returning home, their news arrived in coffins. This tragedy of Lucknow will float like smoke in the memories of the city for a long time.
