A statement by former senior Singapore diplomat Bilhari Kausikan regarding Pakistan is being discussed at the international level. Referring to the 1991 Singapore Airlines hijacking incident, he made a scathing attack on Pakistan’s politics, army and governance. Kausikan said that Pakistan has been standing on the verge of failure for a long time due to its wrong policies.

Narrated story of 1991 plane hijacking
Speaking at a global conference, Bilhari Kausikan said that on March 26, 1991, Singapore Airlines flight SQ117 was hijacked by four Pakistani terrorists. There were 114 passengers and 11 crew members on board the plane. The main demand of the kidnappers was to talk to the then former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

‘Madam is sleeping, she cannot be disturbed’
Kausikan told that during the conversation, he obtained Benazir Bhutto’s residence number with the help of Pakistan High Commission at around 3 o’clock in the night. After a lot of efforts, we talked to an English speaking person, but the reply was, “Madam is sleeping, she cannot be disturbed.” As soon as he heard this he disconnected the phone.

All kidnappers killed in commando operation
Kausikan said that no solution emerged from the talks. After this, Singapore’s special commandos entered the plane and killed all four hijackers. In this action all the passengers and crew were rescued safely. He said that till today it is not clear what the real demands of the kidnappers were, because all of them were killed.

Sharp comment on Pakistan
The former diplomat said that Pakistan’s problems are not responsible for its geographical location, but the poor political system that has been going on for decades, economic mismanagement and the role of the army. According to him, Pakistan has been on the verge of becoming a “failed state” for a long time and the situation has become more serious due to lack of control on radical organizations.

Statement given on nuclear weapons also
Kausikan said that the world takes Pakistan seriously mainly because of its nuclear weapons. He claimed that if Pakistan did not have nuclear weapons, the international community would not have paid that much attention to it.
