The demand to include 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the ODI team, who performed brilliantly in the T20 series against Zimbabwe, has now intensified. Former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Farooq Engineer believes that selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar should soon give Vaibhav a chance in the Indian ODI team to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored 151 runs in the three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe. During this, he scored two brilliant half-centuries and won the Player of the Series award. His performance has impressed even the cricket experts.
Vaibhav should open with Rohit Sharma
Farooq Engineer believes that at present the ideal opening pair for India can be Rohit Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. According to him, Shubman Gill should bat at number-4, while Virat Kohli can play at number-3. He said that the opening pair of left and right handed batsmen creates more pressure on the opposition team. Aggressive batsmen like Vaibhav can take better advantage of the new ball and score runs quickly by finding big gaps in the initial overs.
Should get a chance in ODI also
Farooq Engineer says that the basic technique of batting in T20 and ODI cricket is not much different. According to him, if a batsman is scoring runs continuously and is full of confidence, then he should get a chance in ODI cricket also. He said that Vaibhav can give a fast start to the team and this will give enough time to the middle-order batsmen to handle the innings. According to him, Vaibhav is such a player who can win many matches single-handedly.
‘No need for much coaching’
The former Indian cricketer also praised Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s natural batting. He believes that a young batsman should not try to make excessive technical changes. He said that Vaibhav has extraordinary talent and he can put pressure on any bowler with his aggressive style.

Comparing them with the natural batting style of great batsman Vivian Richards, Engineer said that trust should be maintained in such players, because they can prove to be a big asset for the Indian team in future. Keeping in view the 2027 ODI World Cup, it will be interesting to see whether the selectors give Vaibhav Suryavanshi a chance in the ODI team soon or he has to wait longer.
