Diabetes Cases Rising Rapidly In India: After the Corona epidemic, a big change has been seen in the lifestyle of people in India. Spending more time at home, lack of physical activity and bad eating habits have had a deep impact on health. Now the latest report of National Family Health Survey-6 has presented a picture which has increased the concern of health experts. According to the report, cases of obesity and high blood sugar are increasing rapidly in the country, which can become a major cause of serious diseases like diabetes in the future.

The NFHS-6 survey released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was conducted during 2023-24. In this, about 6.79 lakh families from 715 districts of all the states and union territories of the country except Manipur were included. The report gives information about many important indicators related to health, nutrition and population.

The problem of diabetes is increasing rapidly

According to the NFHS-6 report, diabetes among people above 15 years of age in the country. Is growing rapidly. The survey included those people whose blood sugar level was more than 141 mg/dl or who were regularly taking medicines to control it. The report shows that the cases of this disease have increased by about 5 percent in the last few years. Talking about men, there are about 56 crore men above 15 years of age in the country. Of these, about 11.7 crore men are affected by diabetes. Earlier in 2021, this number was around 8.7 crores. While in NFHS-5, 15.6 percent men were suffering from this disease, now this figure has increased to 20.9 percent. The situation among women also remains worrying. At present, about 7.12 crore women of the country are suffering from diabetes, whereas three years ago this number was about 5.4 crore. The rate of diabetes among women has increased from 13.5 percent to 17.8 percent, which represents a significant increase of 4.3 percent.

The problem of obesity is increasing

According to the report, there has been a significant increase in the problem of obesity and overweight among women in the age group of 15 to 49 years. While in the year 2019-21, 24 percent women were overweight or obese, this figure increased to 30.7 percent in 2023-24. The situation is more worrying in urban areas, where 42.8 percent women are overweight or obese, while in rural areas this figure is 25.5 percent. The same trend was seen in men also. In 2019-21, 22.9 percent men were in the overweight or obese category, which increased to 27.3 percent in 2023-24. 23 percent men in rural areas, while 36.3 percent men in urban areas were found to be overweight or obese.
