- 22.7 lakh students registered for NEET UG 2026, with 96.9% attendance.
- Maximum 3.6 lakh students appeared for the exam from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra at second place.
- More than 17 lakh candidates from top 9 states, participation is less in smaller states.
- The attendance rate in NEET UG in Gujarat, Puducherry, Rajasthan was more than 97.9%.
This time also a record number of students participated in NEET UG 2026, one of the biggest medical entrance exams in the country. The latest data from the National Testing Agency (NTA) shows that about 41 percent of the students who registered from across the country were from only four states. Which includes Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Bihar.
This year a total of 22.7 lakh students had registered for NEET UG. Of these, more than 22 lakh students appeared for the examination. That means the attendance rate across the country was 96.9 percent, which is considered very strong for such a big examination.
UP becomes the biggest land of medical dreams
Like every year, this time too Uttar Pradesh remained at the forefront. Around 3.6 lakh students were allotted examination centers from the state. This number is the highest in the entire country. It is clear from this how much enthusiasm there is among the youth for medical studies in UP. Maharashtra stood second from where about 2.2 lakh students appeared for the examination. About 2 lakh students in Rajasthan and about 1.5 lakh students in Bihar became part of the examination process. The total number of candidates from these four states became a major part of the total candidates in the country.
Dominance of big states continues
Apart from these four states, a large number of students came from many big states also. Both Karnataka and Bihar gave more than 1.5 lakh candidates. About 1.4 lakh students from Tamil Nadu appeared in the examination. About 1.2 lakh students from Madhya Pradesh, 1.1 lakh from Kerala and about 1 lakh from West Bengal appeared in this examination. Statistics show that more than 17 lakh candidates came from the top 9 states alone, which is almost three-fourths of the total number.

Lower numbers in smaller states and union territories
While the medical preparedness environment is clearly visible in big states, this number was much less in small states and union territories. In many places less than 5,000 students registered. This also shows that the spread of medical preparation in the country is not uniform. Education experts believe that factors like population, coaching environment, study facilities and availability of medical colleges influence NEET participation in different states.
Great attendance across the country
Despite being such a big examination, the attendance of the students was very good. Out of 22.7 lakh, only 69,976 students could not appear in the examination. Almost all the remaining students reached their centres. Gujarat won in terms of attendance. Here 98.1 percent students came to take the examination. Puducherry also remained far ahead with 98 percent. 97.9 percent attendance was recorded in Rajasthan. Talking about big states, 97.5 percent students in Uttar Pradesh and 97.4 percent students in Maharashtra appeared for the examination. This shows how important NEET is for students.
condition of other states
While in most of the states the attendance was around 97 percent, in Kerala this rate was 94.4 percent, which is the lowest among the big states. 95.1 percent students in Assam and 95.9 percent students in Tamil Nadu appeared in the examination.
